Katherine Roth
“Inspired by Nature, Guided by Spirit”
Katherine is an artist from Amherstburg, Ontario who has enjoyed a lifelong journey with creativity including gardening, planting trees for the environment, photography, sewing, décor creations and staging homes for real estate clients.
Her passion for painting began over 20 years ago and since then she has become known for her dreamy, abstract acrylic landscapes. She often paints her impression of an early sunrise, the last light of a sunset, drifting clouds or scenes from the beaches of Pelee Island and beyond.
Her creative process involves colour-staining the canvas where she feels more like she is mixing light instead of paint. Being fully present, she plays with abstraction and realism—creating an “impression” of what she may have seen and felt during early morning walks with her faithful companion, Tessa, a rescued German shepherd.
Nature has always been Katherine’s inspiration, spirit, her guide and creative thought, her inner mentor in everything she does. Art aficionados and collectors often say that her atmospheric paintings evoke ethereal feelings of peace and tranquility and are easy to get lost in while viewing them as if watching colourful clouds drifting by. A calming, comforting effect occurs in any interior space where her work is displayed.
Her most recent works embrace an ancient medium called “encaustic”…which dates back over 4,000 years. It is the art of painting with hot beeswax, oil pigments and Damar resin. In addition to painting on birch boards, Katherine applies this technique to live edge wood. When she opens her mind and follows her intuition while exploring this fascinating medium, Katherine finds herself embarking on a wondrous voyage of discovery. Each new piece combines luscious textures and vibrant, scintillating colours, resulting in creative outcomes and images truly inspired by nature! All these works are created in her encaustic studio, a converted horse stable surrounded by a mature Carolinian forest with over 1,500 trees, many of which she has planted since 1990!
One of her favourite sources of inspiration is “The Sanctuary” on Pelee Island, known as The Mission Hall Project. Supplied with some of the salvaged wood from the project, Katherine creates miniature treasures in the encaustic medium that offer visitors an original work of art, a piece of 1911 history and a remembrance of special places they may have seen during their visit, including majestic trees, white sandy beaches, lavender fields, spectacular skies and some of the most amazing sunsets on the island.
Katherine’s next creative adventure is once again inspired by nature and the earth and focuses on trees, their contribution to the environment, their ability to heal and the way they communicate. The ancient encaustic technique on live edge wood will bring the viewer into close contact with the trees’ textures, their spirit and the amazing impact they have on our lives.
Roth’s paintings are in collections in Amherstburg, Windsor, Ottawa, Toronto, Stratford and Pelee Island, Ontario, the United States, England and Scotland!
She has participated in many group shows in Windsor including Sho Art Studios, Nancy Johns Gallery, SB Contemporary Art, Artspeak Gallery and in Amherstburg at the Gibson Gallery.
As a recent member of The Arts Society of Kingsville, she submitted several pieces of art to the “Just Imagine” abstract show in February 2023. In her words, “I’m thrilled to be a part of this enthusiastic, talented and welcoming group of artists sharing space in a beautiful historic building!
